The unicellar green algae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, can orient themselves under various light conditions. They swim toward or away from light under continuous illumination (phototaxis) or exhibit photophobic or stop response when the light intensity changes abruptly. This behaviour is mediated by a photosensing system including light-gated ion channels, channelrhodopsins (ChRs), as primary photoreceptors. Less well-studied voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) are also believed to be involved in the control of motion reactions in the green algae. My research interest lies in the biophysical study of motility behaviour of Chlamydomonas with the focus on the function of ChRs and VGCCs. The methods used in my work are light scattering, single-cells tracking, high-resolution microscopy and computed tomography.
