My research work focuses on the goal of modifying Chlamydomonas  genomes for basic research and biotechnology. Our plans include inactivation and modification of sensory photoreceptor genes to understand better functions of 11 photoreceptors in Chlamydomonas (eight rhodopsin-related proteins, two cryptochromes and a phototropin). Toward this goal, we work with site-specific endonucleases (zinc finger nucleases,TALENs and Cas9-gRNA) able to insert an unique double-strand cut into the eukaryotic genome that is resulted in a site-specific mutation. Nuclear homologous recombination is of our special interest as one of the mechanisms underlying the site-directed mutagenesis.
