Life cycle of parasites

For research and teaching we keep several life cycles of protozoan and helminth parasites at our Department. Some parasite species are also kryoconserved in liquid nitrogen for demonstration purposes (e. g. in practicals). As many of our parasites are dependent on living in a rodent host, we have to keep and breed several rodent species. Responsible for the animal care are Karin Biermann and Sabine Thiel.

  • Life cycle of Acanthocheilonema viteae (tissue dwelling Nematode). Final host: Meriones unguiculatus (jird); Intermediate host: Soft ticks (Ornithodoros moubata).
  • Life cycle of Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Gut nematode). Host: White mouse.
  • Schistosoma mansoni (blood fluke), final host: mouse, intermediate host: Biophalaria glabrata
  • Life cycle of Hymenolepis diminuta (rat tapeworm). Final host: Rat; Intermediate host: Confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum).
  • Life cycle of Eimeria falciformis (Coccid of the intestine). Host: White mouse.
  • Life cycle of Sarcocystis spp. (cyst forming coccid). Host: Lizards of the genus Gallotia.
