Gas Chromatography
GC-FID
Modern gas chromatographic (GC) methods facilitate the separation of individual fatty acids. With the aid of commercially available standards we identify about 50 fatty acids by retention time with regular analysis. One quantification method for fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) in our lab is by GC-FID, i.e. using a GC equipped with a flame ionisation detector. This is a rapid and easy procedure.
Sherlock® Microbial Identification System
With the Sherlock® Microbial Identification System we analyse FAMEs of bacteria, fungi and animals. This software applies libraries (custom or user specific) for identification of organisms. The pattern recognition algorithms, combined with a calibration mixture, are standardised on our instrument. Relationship between samples can be explored using cluster or principal component analysis directly from chromatographic data.
